The Meanings of these Tarot Cards

Card One

Knight of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility, rectitude-all on the normal and external plane.

Card Description

He rides a slow, enduring, heavy horse, to which his own aspect corresponds. He exhibits his symbol, but does not look therein.

Card Two

Three of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Metier, trade, skilled labour; usually, however, regarded as a card of nobility, aristocracy, renown, glory.

Mme. Le Marchand's Divinatory Meanings

a husband will seek you when you have learned to cook, to be a good nurse, and to sing; your wife will love you and be faithful to you, if you keep near her and at home; discord with your wedded partner, but finally reconciliation and lasting peace

Card Description

A sculptor at his work in a monastery. Compare the design which illustrates the Eight of Pentacles. The apprentice or amateur therein has received his reward and is now at work in earnest.

Card Three

The World from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Assured success, recompense, voyage, route, emigration, flight, change of place.

Card Description

As this final message of the Major Trumps is unchanged--and indeed unchangeable--in respect of its design, it has been partly described already regarding its deeper sense. It represents also the perfection and end of the Cosmos, the secret which is within it, the rapture of the universe when it understands itself in God. It is further the state of the soul in the consciousness of Divine Vision, reflected from the self-knowing spirit. But these meanings are without prejudice to that which I have said concerning it on the material side. It has more than one message on the macrocosmic side and is, for example, the state of the restored world when the law of manifestation shall have been carried to the highest degree of natural perfection. But it is perhaps more especially a story of the past, referring to that day when all was declared to be good, when the morning stars sang together and all the Sons of God shouted for joy. One of the worst explanations concerning it is that the figure symbolizes the Magus when he has reached the highest degree of initiation; another account says that it represents the absolute, which is ridiculous. The figure has been said to stand for Truth, which is, however, more properly allocated to the seventeenth card. Lastly, it has been called the Crown of the Magi.

Card Four

Seven of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

These are exceedingly contradictory; in the main, it is a card of money, business, barter; but one reading gives altercation, quarrels--and another innocence, ingenuity, purgation.

Mme. Le Marchand's Divinatory Meanings

you will live with the constant idea that you will at last be fortunate; with this conceit your life will pass away, and you will at last die happy. You will always hope to win the high prize in the lottery, but you will never win it, until you have been kissed by the greatest lady in the land.

Card Description

A young man, leaning on his staff, looks intently at seven pentacles attached to a clump of greenery on his right; one would say that these were his treasures and that his heart was there.

Card Five

Eight of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Work, employment, commission, craftsmanship, skill in craft and business, perhaps in the preparatory stage.

Mme. Le Marchand's Divinatory Meanings

what you dream on the night between Friday and Saturday, will come out true. If you do the contrary to that which some one whispers in your ear, you will have good luck. This card also signifies the prosperous course of any business undertaking; a bountiful harvest, and a fruitful marriage.

Card Description

An artist in stone at his work, which he exhibits in the form of trophies.

Card Six

Ace of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Perfect contentment, felicity, ecstasy; also speedy intelligence; gold.

Mme. Le Marchand's Divinatory Meanings

happy fortune; a bright and prosperous career; if you trust in God he will not forsake you.

Card Description

A hand--issuing, as usual, from a cloud--holds up a pentacle.

Card Seven

Nine of Pentacles from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Prudence, safety, success, accomplishment, certitude, discernment.

Mme. Le Marchand's Divinatory Meanings

a lady (a gentleman) will love you ardently so long as you have rosy cheeks; when the color fads, her (his) love will fade also.

Card Description

A woman, with a bird upon her wrist, stands amidst a great abundance of grapevines in the garden of a manorial house. It is a wide domain, suggesting plenty in all things. Possibly it is her own possession and testifies to material well-being.

Card Eight

Knight of Cups from the Waite Smith Tarot Deck

Card Meaning When Upright

Arrival, approach--sometimes that of a messenger; advances, proposition, demeanour, invitation, incitement.

Card Description

Graceful, but not warlike; riding quietly, wearing a winged helmet, referring to those higher graces of the imagination which sometimes characterize this card. He too is a dreamer, but the images of the side of sense haunt him in his vision.
